Lamination
Lamination is the final production step, in which the metalli
zed holographic film is bonded to a substrate material to create the finished product. This stage transforms the standalone holographic film into a functional material ready for integration into packaging, labels, cards, or decorative applications.
Bonding to Paper and Other Substrates
The lamination process uses heat and pressure to bond the metallized film to the target substrate. An adhesive layer is first applied to either the holographic film or the substrate. The two materials are then passed through heated lamination rollers under controlled pressure, creating a permanent bond. The specific adhesive and process parameters depend on the substrate material and the end-use requirements.
For paper and paperboard substrates, which are the most common materials in the packaging industry, water-based or hot-melt adhesives are typically used. The lamination process must account for the absorbency and surface characteristics of the paper. Coated art paper provides a smooth surface for excellent film adhesion and visual appearance, while uncoated kraft papers may require adhesive formulation adjustments. Lamination temperatures typically range from 80 to 120 degrees Celsius, with pressure calibrated to ensure full contact without crushing the paper substrate.
For non-paper substrates such as plastics, textiles, leather, and synthetic materials, the lamination process is adapted accordingly. Plastic substrates such as PVC, PET, and polycarbonate can be laminated using thermal bonding or UV-curable adhesives. Textile applications require flexible adhesives that maintain bond strength during fabric draping and washing. Leather and synthetic material applications demand adhesives with excellent adhesion to low-surface-energy materials.
After lamination, the composite material may undergo additional finishing operations depending on the application: die-cutting to create individual labels or decals, slitting to narrow widths, sheet cutting to specific dimensions, or surface treatment to prepare for subsequent printing. The finished holographic laminate is now ready for integration into the final product, whether that is a premium cigarette pack, a luxury cosmetics box, a collectible trading card, an authentication label, or any of the countless other applications where nano-visual lithography adds value through stunning visual effects and robust anti-counterfeiting protection.
